Introduction:
The United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is an
integral part of the United Nations, which is working directly with several
international, national and local NGOs. The organization is usually dedicated
to work on the humanitarian sector and especially look after the refugees who
are a resultant of different crisis or all those people who are underprivileged
and are denied all the basic necessities such as food, health and shelter. The Relief India Trust explains about the
important role of UNHCR, which is definitely making a big impact on the NGO’s
sector in the country. The UNHCR is actually the body that governs all the
registered NGOs who actually are interested in working on an international
level or they are looking for international funds to resolve all the local
issues. The UNHCR has some essential requirements to be fulfilled by all the
NGOs in order to play a much substantial role on a much larger scale. The
benefit of following in the footsteps of UNHCR would eventually help the NGOs
and they would be able to help their society in a much substantial and
effective way. This is exactly what the motive of Relief India Trust is and it also strictly adheres to all the rules
and requirements that are set by UNHCR for all the NGOs. The following is a
list of some of the top requirements as imposed by UNHCR for the NGOs who are
essentially working on the humanitarian sector:
·
An NGO must be a non-profit and a non-commercial
organization that doesn’t seek any monetary benefits for business purposes.
- It should be a nongovernmental organization with no political interference
- It should be legally registered in the country where it is operating.
- It must subscribe to all the humanitarian practices and values.
The above mentioned are all the basic requirements of UNHCR,
which are mandatory. There are numerous other requirements which are negotiable
and can be discussed when seeking help through this prestigious and renowned
international body of the United Nations.
According to Relief India Trust the
following are those additional characteristics which the international agencies
such as UNHCR might look for in the NGOs:
- Ideally it must have an established headquarter
- The constitution could be democratically adopted.
- There can ideally be a separation of the executives from the policy makers.
- The existence of the NGO in its vicinity should be at least two years or more.
- The NGO must not advocate or promote violence, neither should they possess any arms, no matter whatever the situation or circumstances of the NGOs are.
·
It is ideally funded mostly by the wealthy
individual members. It is the most relaxed condition as it is practically near
to impossible in poor and developing countries. It is because, the poor
countries keep all doors open for taking the aid as they need to deal with the
social issues on emergency grounds.
